low estrogen and weight gain

low estrogen and weight gain

In this article we are going to discuss the link between low estrogen and weight gain. As for the day, there are millions of woman and man struggling with overweight. Some of them have piled on unnecessary pounds due to clearly unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical activity and yo-yo dieting, while in other instances the weight gain (or difficulties to shed pounds) seems to be unexplainable. In cases like this many woman are tempted to put all the blame on the supposed hormone imbalance in their bodies. They usually say something like “there must be something wrong with my thyroid”, or “maybe I just have low estrogen”. Such claims are especially popular among the women who are going through menopauses.
However, most of the times such guess appears to be false for one of the following reasons: the balance of hormones is intact or the levels of estrogen are actually abnormal, but its effects on weight are minor or different than expected. Although millions of dollars have been spent on the research, to this day scientists have not find an agreement on what is the actual link between low estrogen and weight gain. In this article we are going to look at the argument provided on both sides.
There some good proof that the lack of estrogen in organism can cause weight gain. In order to understand how this happens, one must know three effects of this female sex hormone. First of all, it decreases the activity of lipoprotein lipase, the enzyme which helps fat uptake into the cells. Second, it increases the activity of hormone sensitive lipase (HSL), which plays an important role in regulating female metabolism. Most active during the exercising, HSL speeds up the process during which fat is broken into various fatty acids and consumed as the source of energy, thus helping to melt down the fat storage in female body. Another reason to claim that there might be a significant link between low estrogen and weight gain is that this female sex hormone stimulates the production of GH. Growth hormone is known to both inhibit the storage of fat and increase metabolization of fat that has already been stored in the past.
Although all this would suggest that estrogen insufficiency cause women to pile on pounds, the link between low estrogen and weight gain is actually much more complicex. Yes, it is true that low estrogen levels are often associated with changes in body mass index, but it is hard to say whether there is a causal link and if so, whether estrogen actually encourages or inhibits storage of fat. Some scientists claim that decreasing levels of estrogen should actually lead to weight loss, as estrogen is responsible for “convincing” female body to store more fat.
