Mirena coil and weight gain
Since this means of contraception appeared in the market, there have been a lot of talks about Mirena coil and weight gain. Although Mirena is widely considered one of the most reliable and relatively convenient means of contraception, such talks have actually stopped thousands of woman from using it. From our point of view, this is completely understandable. Although reliability undoubtedly remains the first ant the most important aspect we take in consideration when choosing the birth control method, we also want to make sure that we would experience as little side effects as possible. Although compared with such risks as cancer or heart diseases the loss of shape seems a minor problem, it is still something we would prefer to avoid.
But does the link between Mirena coil and weight gain actually exist, or this is just a myth? Before we turn to this question, let us tell you a little more about this birth control method. Mirena is a small intrauterine device which contains a hormone called levonorgestrel. Once inserted into the uterus, this IUD remains active for 3-5 years. All this time the small amount of levonorgestrel it releases prevents the egg from fertilization and attaching to the wall of uterus. Needless to say, an extremely long period of effectiveness and reliability makes Mirena seem like a much more attractive solution than contraceptive pills. No need to use some medications every day, no panic attacks that usually follow if you forget to do so… Sounds like a dream.
However, this means of contraception is associated with quite a few side effects, including Mirena weight gain. Most ladies who have been using this hormonal intrauterine device for one year claimed that during this period they have piled on from 3 to 5 pounds. Of course, absolute majority of women are not happy to see even the slightest increases in their body weight, however, 5 pounds is something that most of us could deal with without giving ourselves extremely hard times. What is more scary, some of the ladies who chose Mirena claimed that while using this means of contraception they got heavier by up to 20 pounds! Most of them have managed to get rid of unnecessary weight after the device was retrieved, but this required hard fork and effort.
There are a couple of ways to explain the link between the use of Mirena coil and weight gain. First of all, there is some evidence that by changing the natural balance of hormones in female body it decreases the rates of metabolism. Second, one of the side effects of Mirena are mood swings, which in turn might lead to “emotional eating”. The same effects are often experienced by the ladies who are using contraceptive pills.
