progesterone and weight gain

In this article we are going to talk about progesterone and weight gain. As you might already know, this is a hormone produced and released by ovaries. It plays a considerable role in the functioning of female reproductive organs, thus abnormal progesterone levels might misbalance menstrual periods and cause some symptoms that usually occur during the menopause. Abnormal levels of this hormone could also cause infertility or decreased fertility, as it is necessary for maintaining pregnancy: without it the fertilized egg could not be implanted into the uterus.
Before we start talking about progesterone and weight gain, we should also mention the most common uses of this hormone in cosmetics and medicine. This is important so you would understand that despite progesterone weight gain, for some people its use is absolutely necessary. In cosmetics progesterone i usually used as a component to various preparations applied to the skin. As for the day, the amounts of progesterone in cosmetics are still not restricted by any laws. Two decades ago FDA proposed that the amounts of progesterone should not exceed mg/oz and that a person should not use more than 2oz of this hormone per month, but the proposition was later declined. Anyway, if you want to avoid any risks, you should still follow this rule when choosing cosmetic. The scientists that proposed this law in the first place had some good reasons.
In medicine, the most popular use of progesterone is to diminish the symptoms of menopauses. As you might now, for absolute majority of women this period in life is hard not only physically, but also psychologically. Even the ladies who do not want to have any (or any more) kids in the future find it pretty hard to get around the idea that they are no longer fertile. Plus, as we have already mentioned menopauses usually bring variety of physical problems and inconveniences, which can be diminished with the help of progesterone. This hormone is also used to treat some allergies, breast tenderness, bloating, depression, fatigue, decreased sex drive, headaches, lumpy breasts, low blood sugar, bone loss in young woman, symptoms of PMS, uterine cancer, thyroid problems, water retention and vaginal irritation.
Unfortunately, like most medications, the preparations that contain this hormone have some side effects and one of them is progesterone weight gain. This might seem a little bit strange, having in mind that progesterone also occurs in our bodies naturally. However, this does not seem disturbing at all if you know that most of hormones have different effects when they are produced in appropriate amounts and when their levels are abnormal. Although a lot of women who used progesterone reported slight increases in their weight, not all the female experience this side effect.
