Some of them decides to refrain from meat because they love animals too much to bear the thought that they are eating them, while the others believe that vegetarianism could help to solve the problem of famine (the grain currently fed to farm animals could be used to feed the starving people).Still the others avoid meat because they are concerned about their own health: quite a few serious diseases can be caught simply by eating undercooked meat, plus meat contains a lot of fat and cholesterol. As they turn away from meat, a lot of vegetarians start using soy as the main source of protein. Those of them who used to be unaware of the links between soy and weight gain gets an unpleasant surprise: they start piling on pounds. What makes this “side effect” even more unpleasant, the extra pounds usually concentrates in abdominal area, distorting the figure. The excessive use of soy products can have especially undesirable effects, such as fatty breasts, on male. As a result the person who “overdoses” soy starts looking as if he spent most of the time on the couch, eating burgers and other junk food, while he is doing his best to lead a healthy lifestyle.
The link between soy and weight gain can be easily explained. The latest research shows that this product increases the levels of estrogen in the body. That’s why some doctors even recommend it for females experiencing the symptoms of menopause! Although some medical tests evidence that the right doses of estrogen speeds metabolism, its surplus can bring an opposite effect. Not only it encourages the concentration of fat on the belly, the excessive amounts of estrogen can also be responsible for considerable mood swings. You might think that as unpleasant as they are, mood swings have nothing to do with your weight, but this is not essentially true. One does not have to be a psychologist to notice that the feeling of hunger is not the only feeling that encourages us to open the fridge. Most of us unconsciously use food as a means to cope with stress, sadness and other negative emotions.
The link between the excessive conception of soy and weight gain is not the only reason why you should be careful while using soy products: they also reduce assimilation of magnesium, iron, copper and calcium, interfere with protein digestion, disrupt endocrine function and increase the body’s requirements for vitamin D.
